Affordability and convenience led Ivan Gutierrez to choose Garden City Community College, where he saved money and earned his associate degree in business in 2017.
Little did he know that this educational investment would pay off a few short years later when he ventured into the food industry, opening his own successful food truck, Los Charros Birria.
Reflecting on his academic journey at GCCC, Ivan attributes his success to the quality of classes
and the guidance of his instructors.
“I had a lot of great classes and a lot of great teachers,” he said.
One standout mentor, Chip Marcy, played a crucial role by teaching Ivan about opportunity cost, a lesson that continues to influence his decision-making process.
The impact of GCCC extended beyond the classroom, with Ivan cherishing the teachings of instructors like Winsom Lamb, Dr. Susan Ortega, Renee Harbin, Tammy Hutcheson, Phil Terpstra, and Michael Knutson. These educators impacted Ivan’s life, fostering lasting relationships for which he remains grateful.
“Each one of them had an impact on my life and I am super thankful for the long-lasting relationships that came from GCCC,” he said.
In his current role as an entrepreneur and CEO of Los Charros Birria, Ivan manages the day-to-day operations of the food truck. This includes overseeing inventory, handling budgets, and strategically planning for the business’s growth.
When asked about advice for current or prospective GCCC students, Ivan emphasized the importance of taking one step at a time and facing challenges with determination.
“Be intentional with your life,” he said.
He encourages making decisions, even if they initially seem uncertain, underlining the value of hard work as a key ingredient for success.
