New Mercer exhibit explores human condition

The Mercer Gallery is hosting Josh Knott and Josh Novak from Crowder College in Neosho, MO, through April 26, the final exhibition before the student art exhibition at the end of the month.

The “MUCBANG HURKLE DURKLE” exhibition consists of mixed-media prints by Knott containing grotesque imagery that explores the human condition.

At the same time, Novak’s ceramic sculptures flirt with function while taking influences from the built environment and the human condition.
Knott and Novak have formed a robust artistic brotherhood that started at Fort Hays State University over a decade ago, as both artists have received MFAs from their art program.

Knott has degrees from Mid-Plains Community College, FHSU, and Tulane University and hails from McCook, Nebraska.

Novak has degrees from Doane University and FHSU and experience teaching in Jordan. His work fits together like a Ying Yang, with Knott’s fulfilling the grotesque dark side of the circle with abstract figurative work complete with mysterious symbols and iconography.

In contrast, Novak’s work fits into the bright side of the circle with his decorative, functional pottery with a twist of the whimsical and the human condition.
All are welcome to view this exhibition during regular gallery hours Monday through Wednesday, from 9 am to 4 pm, Thursdays from 9 am to 10 pm, and Fridays from 9 am to 4 pm. For more information, please contact Gallery Director Michael Knutson at [email protected].
