Alumnus blends professional development, inspiration at GCCC

Ernesto Ferrel, GCCC alumnus, presented to the Fall 2025 Professional Arts Practices class on September 12.

Garden City Community College’s Professional Arts Practices course (ARTS-225-01) welcomed alumnus Ernesto Ferrel back to campus on September 12 for a special session that blended professional development with inspiration.

Ernesto, a 2021 GCCC graduate and accomplished artist, photographer, and creative, provided students with professional headshots while also sharing his journey in the visual arts. Drawing from his experiences building a career in rural America, Ernesto highlighted the importance of self-expression, community, and embracing one’s unique perspective in the creative industry.

“This course is about preparing students for the next step, whether transferring to a university or pursuing art-related careers,” said Michael Knutson, GCCC Professor of Art. “Having Ernesto return to share his story and skills gave our students a firsthand look at how dedication, authenticity, and professionalism can shape a successful arts career.”

The Professional Arts Practices course is designed to equip Associate of Arts students with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate professional studio environments. Students gain hands-on experience in professional documentation, networking, and workplace practices that serve as a foundation for future academic and career endeavors.

During his time at GCCC, Ernesto distinguished himself as Student Body President and an active member of the Art Club, Prism Club, and other organizations. He continues to grow his creative brand through photography, fashion projects, and a strong social media presence that celebrates cultural expression. Widely recognized for his advocacy in LGBTQ+ and Hispanic communities, Ernesto uses his platform to promote visibility and inspire others to live authentically.

Students left the session not only with professional headshots to use in their portfolios but also with encouragement to embrace confidence and creativity in their future pursuits.
