The Garden City High School Visual Arts Awards Exhibition, a dynamic and community-centered celebration of emerging artistic talent in southwest Kansas, is on display now through Dec. 16 at the Mercer Gallery at Garden City Community College.
The exhibition showcases exceptional work created by GCHS sophomores, juniors, and seniors, demonstrating the power, promise, and necessity of the visual arts in rural America.
Following the exhibition, the GCCC Visual Arts Department will host the Second Annual High School Visual Arts Activity Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
This full-day program invites GCHS students into the heart of the college’s Fine Arts facilities for an immersive, hands-on experience.
Participants will engage in various art demonstrations, workshops, and professional critiques led by GCCC Art faculty with activities designed to expand their technical skills, deepen creative thinking, and reinforce the value of pursuing the arts at the collegiate level.
This partnership between GCHS and GCCC reflects a shared commitment to sustaining and advancing the cultural vitality of southwest Kansas. In rural regions where access to arts resources can be limited, collaborative initiatives like this are essential, fostering creative confidence, meaningful expression, and long-term community engagement.
“The visual arts are essential to the cultural and intellectual health of rural communities,” said Gallery Director Michael Knutson. “When students see their work displayed in a professional gallery, they feel the weight and worth of their creative voice, and that experience can shape their future.”
Art education in public schools remains a critical pillar for rural youth, empowering students with problem-solving skills, emotional expression, cultural awareness, and the ability to envision broader possibilities for themselves and their communities.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of GCHS art instructor Candace Waltz, the GCHS Visual Arts Department, and the continued support of GCCC faculty and staff, this collaboration provides young artists with a platform to grow, be recognized, and connect with the broader arts community of southwest Kansas.
GCCC looks forward to expanding these efforts and continuing to cultivate the next generation of Kansas artists.
The Mercer Gallery is located within the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building at Garden City Community College. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
