GCCC Alumni Spotlight: Jeff Braun

Originally from Deerfield, Kansas, Jeff Braun’s college journey began close to home.

Braun chose to attend Garden City Community College in the fall of 1999, drawn by both its proximity and the flexibility it offered at a pivotal time in his life.

“It was close to home, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do yet. It was a great place to get my basic classes done while exploring a few degree options,” he said.

That opportunity to explore proved formative.

While attending GCCC, Braun was introduced to ideas, careers, and possibilities far beyond what he had previously known.

“I learned that there was more out in the real world than what I grew up around. Growing up and going to school in a small community, you are not exposed to a wide range of careers or opportunities. GCCC opened my eyes to what was possible,” he said.

After completing a year at GCCC, Braun continued his education at the University of Kansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communications. His academic journey didn’t stop there. He later went on to earn a Master of Science in Learning and Talent Development from Midland University.

Today, Braun serves as the Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Athletic Communications at Midland University. In this role, he oversees communications and sports information for 33 varsity sports, managing a wide range of responsibilities.

“We handle things like press releases, game recaps, broadcasting, marketing, and official statistics,” he said.

Looking back, Braun credits GCCC as the foundation that set him on his current path.

“GCCC gave me a path to where I wanted to be and to where I am now. Taking intro classes in things like computer science as well as art classes opened my eyes to where I could go in the world,” he said.

When asked what advice he would offer current or prospective GCCC students, Braun emphasized the value of curiosity and connection.

“Explore different classes that are offered at GCCC. Talk to your professors and others about where certain degrees and/or classes can take you,” he said.

Braun’s connection to GCCC extends beyond his time as a student. He has since given back through the GCCC Endowment Association, helping create opportunities for future students.

Reflecting on his experience, Braun said, “While I only attended GCCC for a year, not counting the dual-credit classes I took in high school, it helped create a solid base for my education. After I got my degree, I was grateful to support the GCCC Endowment Association, helping others like me. GCCC is a great school that will prepare and guide you to where you want to be in life.”

From a small-town beginning to a career leading athletic communications at the university level, Braun’s story is a testament to the impact of starting local, staying open, and taking advantage of opportunities along the way.
