Finney County Museum to host 17th Annual Flea Market Festival on July 11

The 17th Annual Flea Market Festival of Antiques, Collectibles, Art and Crafts is coming up 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 11 at the Finney County Historical Museum in Garden City.

Conducted by the Finney County Historical Society, the two-part event is supported by Commerce Bank and the Finney County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Public admission is free. Attendance in recent years has ranged from 3,200 to 4,100 visitors.

GIANT GARAGE SALE

One component is a huge sale of good quality donated merchandise, much like a giant garage sale spread across nearly 4,000 square feet of the museum’s patio and packed into the adjacent Mary Regan Conference Room.

Patio sale merchandise in past years has ranged from glassware, appliances, electronics, furniture, tools and hardware to toys, games, dolls, knick-knacks, home décor, rugs, furniture, pillows, lamps and more.

The museum can accept donated merchandise for the patio sale only through June 30, including most clean, good quality merchandise except clothing, shoes, books, exercise equipment and older, CRT-style TVs or computers.

“We have a nice selection of items this year, and they will be offered at bargain prices,” said Museum Artifact Registrar Yadira Hernandez, who manages merchandise preparation.

VISITING VENDORS

The other element is a gathering of vendors in booths along the sidewalks of Lee Richardson Zoo, just south of the museum, where visitors can shop for crafts, art, antiques, collectibles and lots of other items, while mingling with friends and neighbors in the sun and shade.

A total of 44 vendors set up shop last year, arriving from 13 cities and towns to offer antiques, bags and purses, collectibles, cosmetics, crafts of all kinds, embroidered and crocheted items, glass blocks, hair bows, home improvement services, honey, household and personal care items, jewelry, military surplus, plants, records and CDs.  There were also three-dimensional printed objects, salves, signage, soaps, team logo goods, T-shirts, vintage and contemporary clothing, old-time and contemporary toys, plus additional treasures.

This year organizers are also expecting American and Mexican-style food, snacks and beverages, along with frozen treats and other baked goods to enjoy on-site or take home.  The Daughters of Isabella will operate the museum’s sponsored food station, just south of the historic 1884 William and Lettie Fulton House, selling breakfast burritos, hot dogs and hamburgers.

Vendor registration will continue 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sundays until all spaces are reserved.  The number for information is 620-272-3664.

Museum staff and board members will be supported by up to 50 volunteers, as well as members of the Garden City High School Cross Country Team.  Assistance also comes from the zoo and Garden City Community College.
