Editor’s Note: This article is one of a series of stories this month celebrating Downtown Garden City merchants and businesses.
Jessica Gallardo said homemade soaps and lotions were the biggest products she had when she started SageHouse Bath & Body, 312 N. Main St., eight years ago but the focus is still on natural body care.
“I try to keep things as natural as possible, to help people with whatever issues their dealing with,” she said.
After dealing with sensitive skin and a reaction to commercial soaps, Gallardo got into making natural soaps herself after watching a YouTube video.
Today, the store offers everything from candles and bath items to robes and towels. SageHouse also offers spiritual and wellness products including but not limited to diffusers, essential oils and accessories, incense, smudging and accessories; relaxation products including eye masks and salt lamps; and a variety of home fragrances.
Other services include salt therapy, red light therapy and ion foot cleansing. SageHouse also offers a quarterly soap club. See their website for more information.
Like her fellow business owner Erica Kuhlmeier at Flourish Herbals, Gallardo seeks to delve into whatever wellness issue a customer may have and even collaborates with Flourish occasionally.
“We like to problem solve,” she said. “When people come in with some issues, we like to do research and see how we can help them. I send her people and she sends me people.”
Gallardo said that community spirit is a part of why she loves downtown. For her, downtown creates a kind of nostalgic, home feel.
“That was always my goal was to be on Main Street. I like that it’s slower paced,” she said. “Most customers are more easy going and want to support small business instead of dealing with more of the hustle and bustle you might have at a mall.”
Over the last eight years, she’s gotten to know a lot of her repeat customers and calls them friends.
The Christmas season is a busy one. SageHouse is open daily until Christmas – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
“I’m running on autopilot at this point,” Gallardo said with a smile, noting the store has been open more than 20 days straight.
After Christmas, SageHouse will return to normal hours of 10 – 5:30 Tuesday through Friday, 10 – 4 on Saturdays.
