The first of three exhibits marking the 250th birthday of the United States is scheduled to open May 15 at the Finney County Historical Museum in Garden City and remain through May 21.
Entitled “Kansas Pioneer Patriots,” the 10-panel display is sponsored by the Kansas Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
It will be set up in the museum’s main gallery, where hours are 1-5 p.m. daily. The museum is located at 403 S. Fourth Street, adjacent to the entry arches at Lee Richardson Zoo. Admission is free.
Among historical figures featured in “Kansas Pioneer Patriots” are Potawatomi Nation leader Minnie Evans, pilot Amelia Earhart, General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, World War I and II journalist Peggy Hull, aviation leader Olive Ann Beach and others, including Charles J. “Buffalo” Jones, a Garden City co-founder.
The display has been appearing in numerous Kansas communities this year, primarily at museums and libraries. The exhibit tour is supported in part by the National DAR, a long-serving organization with 3,000 chapters and nearly 190,000 members across the U.S. The DAR was founded in 1890, with membership based on lineal descent from patriots who participated in the American Revolution.
Much of the organization’s activities today promote U.S. historic preservation and education. One of the group’s best-known projects in Kansas includes placement of stone markers along the route of the Santa Fe Trail, including one in Garden City’s Finnup Park.
Other U.S. semiquincentennial displays planned at the museum include “Declaration 1776,” a national traveling exhibit sponsored by Humanities Kansas and scheduled June 27-July 26; and Happy Birthday USA, slated for mid-September to mid-November, featuring history-themed artwork by local children in cooperation with Garden City Arts. Both of those will appear in the Front Door Gallery, where a current display features a collection of signature and autograph quilts.
