Schools schedule open houses to start new year

Garden City Public Schools has scheduled open houses for the start of the school year. Open houses provide parents with the opportunity to become familiar with the schools, teachers, and classrooms that their children will be attending.

Monday, Aug. 10

Alta Brown Elementary, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Abe Hubert Elementary, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Buffalo Jones Elementary, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Edith Scheuerman Elementary, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Florence Wilson Elementary, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Georgia Matthews Elementary, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Gertrude Walker Elementary, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Jennie Barker Elementary, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Jennie Wilson Elementary, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Plymell Elementary: Kindergarten students and parents will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. then all students in kindergarten – sixth grade 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Victor Ornelas Elementary, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center, 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Horace Good Middle School, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Kenneth Henerson Middle School, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Garden City Achieve, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Garden City High School, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 13

Garfield Early Childhood Center, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

The district is asking parents to update their contact information with the schools. The district needs this contact information so buildings can contact families on any updates as we progress through the school year.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 12, with a half-day orientation for students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, seventh grade, ninth and tenth grades, and all students new to Garden City Public Schools. Abe Hubert Elementary School, Jennie Barker Elementary School and Plymell Elementary School are also encouraging sixth graders to attend school on August 12. This will help the students at those schools get prepared for the start of the school year.

The first full day of school for Garden City Public Schools is Thursday, August 13.

Garfield Early Childhood Center will start school on Monday, August 17. There are two sessions held during the day at the school. The morning session will start at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 11:50 a.m. The afternoon session will start at 1:15 p.m. and ends at 4:20 p.m.

The school will be holding screenings on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 to get students ready for the start of the school year.
