GCCC Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Matt Johannes

Embarking on his higher education journey in the fall of 1991 at Garden City Community College, Dr. Matt Johannes, a native of Garden City, found the experience highly beneficial.

“It was convenient and cost-effective to be able to take courses here in my hometown,” he said.

During his time at GCCC, Dr. Johannes not only took advantage of the accessible location but also engaged in on-campus activities such as working as a tutor, participating in Phi Theta Kappa, and contributing to the Science Club.

Reflecting on his years at GCCC, he said, “It was a great way to get acclimated to college life. At GCCC, you can learn how the college system works and begin your journey in a smaller hometown atmosphere.”

The transferability of Garden City Community College coursework proved immensely beneficial for Dr. Johannes. Having completed his associate in science in May of 1993, he seamlessly transferred to the University of Kansas to complete his four-year degree

“I was able to take the first two years of coursework at GCCC and transfer that on to apply towards my four-year degree,” he said.
In May 1995, Dr. Johannes earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from the University of Kansas and further pursued his education at Northeastern State University College of Optometry, obtaining his Doctor of Optometry in May 1999.

Dr. Johannes now operates Garden City Vision Source, located at 410 N. Campus Drive, just across the street from where his educational journey began at GCCC.
When asked about advice for current or prospective GCCC students, Dr. Johannes emphasized the significance of working closely with an academic advisor.

“I would recommend that they carefully map out their future degree plans and coordinate that with their GCCC schedule to get the most out of their time here,” he advised, underscoring the importance of strategic planning for a successful educational journey.
