Garden City Community College officials and a member of the Kansas Board of Regents staff on Wednesday toured a couple of the homes under construction in northeast Garden City that are using GCCC construction technology students in partnership with Germann Homes Inc.

Dave Germann said 31 homes are planned for the subdivision on Prairie View Street.

“This right now we’re just using the carpentry trades. In the future, the program’s going to have to grow quite a bit to bring in the HVAC and plumbing and electrical,” Germann said.

In August, GCCC announced the partnership with Germann Homes Inc. that will provide job-site experience for GCCC students and meet the needs of the regional workforce. Second-year students in the construction technology program are getting hands-on training while working on residential construction projects.

Students will gain experience across multiple phases of residential construction, including framing, installing roof trusses, and building the structural shell of homes.

The project was made possible through Germann Homes’ collaboration with the Finney County Economic Development Corporation (FCEDC), which also played a key role in connecting the Germanns with GCCC.

GCCC’s Construction Technology program provides training in key areas, including safety, blueprint reading, framing, finishing, and roofing. Students can complete the program through short-term certificate options or a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree.
