St. Dominic Catholic School fifth-grader Coen Main was recognized last week for creating the best poster in the school and Garden City as part of the annual Kansas Arbor Day Poster Contest.

Sophia Esparza, a fifth grader at St. Mary Catholic School, received second place, and Aidria Varela, a fifth grader at Plymell Elementary School, took third place in the contest.

Arbor Day is a holiday on the last Friday of April in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees.  Garden City is celebrating its 48th year as being a Tree City USA community.

Personnel from the Garden City Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Kansas Forest Service demonstrated how to properly plant a tree at the school during the April 27 event.  The poster winners helped to plant the tree.

Deb Oyler, Vice-Mayor of Garden City, read a proclamation that detailed the importance of trees to Garden City and named April 24, 2026, as Arbor Day in Garden City.
