Schools to celebrate ‘Walk to School Day’

Garden City Public Schools will join schools from around the nation to celebrate Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 7.

Walk to School Day encourages healthy habits, heightens awareness of traffic safety, and is a great way to build local momentum for Safe Routes to Schools.

Schools are planning events focused on walking to school or, for students who are bused, walking at school.  The events will take place at various times with students, parents, staff members, and community leaders taking part in the walks.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, and traffic congestion. The events build connections between families, schools, and the broader community.

There will be planned Walk to School Day activities at several schools.

  • Edith Scheuerman Elementary School will meet and drop off at the West Dillons parking lot at 7:45 a.m. The students and staff will walk to the school.
  • Jennie Wilson Elementary School staff and Garden City High School athletes will help students walk or bike to school starting at 7:40 a.m. at the parking lot at Harding Ave. and Fleming St. All students who walk/ride bikes will receive tokens at the front door of the school.
  • Victor Ornelas Elementary School will have staff meet students and families at 7:45 a.m. at Jennie Barker Road and Spruce Street and also at Susan and Spruce Streets, and will walk with them to school. Coffee and pastries will be provided to parents after walking.
