Student entrepreneurs compete at event

About 30 high school students in Garden City High School business teacher Ember Dortch’s classes competed in a Youth Entrepreneur Challenge on March 12 in Garden City.

Students created 23 business presentations that were judged by local leaders. The YEC event was organized by Dortch, Garden City Downtown Vision and Grant Linenberger, Finney County Economic Development Business Development & Workforce Director.

YEC is a program provided by Network Kansas that includes community-based youth entrepreneurship competitions organized at the local level designed for students grades 6-12 who compete against other students in their age division to earn a chance to compete at the state championship on Apr.17 in Manhattan.

Organizers said the YEC event provides a great opportunity for young people in Kansas to learn real world skills applicable to their business ideas.

Garden City YEC winners and prizes included:

  • First Place: CozyCoCandles, Adrian Leyva and Julissa Santoyo; $1,000.
  • Second Place: Sabores De Mi Terra, Jesus Guerrero Molina; $750.
  • Third Place: Fresh Baked Cheese Cakes, Lil Bohm and Ysai Meza; $500.
  • People’s Choice: CozyCoCandles; $250 (donated by Western State Bank).

Judges for the event included Rich Harp, retired Commerce Bank market manager president; Steve Martinez, Finney County Sheriff; Rebecca Hands-Neidig, former owner Blue Fox Boutique; Jenny Hands, Career & Technical Education Coordinator/AVID District Director Garden City Public Schools; Donna Huber, Scooters; Manny Oritz, Project Design Engineer at The Architect;  Elisa Rueda, Mortgage Loan Officer Western State Bank; Tom Nguyen, Communications Director St. Mary’s Church; and Lea Ann Seiler, Community Entrepreneur Manager Southwest Region at Network Kansas.
